Below is a full, unadulterated speech delivered by Steve Jobs to the post graduates of Stanford University, CEO & founder of Pixar & Apple, a CEO I really respected a lot in the corporate world.

"I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me - I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog , which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

Cambodia Trip In August '06..

It somewhat brings back many wonderful memories of the trip to Cambodia I've undertaken way back in August last year, so I've decided to upload some of the photos I've taken..Click here for a brief history on Angkor Wat.

Hrmz, this is supposedly some ancient female goddess that was carved onto the walls of some Angkor temples; its origins I'm not too sure..but they do bear some resemblance to those goddess you see in Hindu temples though..

Our lunch - considered to be local dishes; though I felt it tasted average; and it was EXPENSIVE! I remember vaguely it was around US$20-$25..we felt ripped off..maybe because we ate inside the temple regions..

Arh..our tour guide suggested we visit the largest lake in Siem Reap..if I remember correctly, it was supposedly linked to the Mekong River..

Look at the hustle & bustle of the crowd at the marketplace near the lake - the locals here are generally quite poor; I've bought some fried banana rice from a small kid who set up her stall at the marketplace, and immediately I was surrounded by quite a few children who looked like they've not eaten for days..in the end I've sympathised with them and gave them some food..

This is a picture that left quite a deep impression in me - the small boy you see is a Vietnamese; he'd row his little 'boat', which is nothing more than a bath-tub all the way to your boat and he'll beg you for money; usually around US$1..

THIS is an unusual sight - at first glance I thought my eyes was fooling me; later I've realised they are not..wonder how did that truck end up like this?

Haiz..fearsome-looking crocodiles - we're brought to this particular crocodile farm cum seafood restaurant in the middle of the lake..ain't they fierce?

Hrmz, I was amazed when I saw a floating Catholic church - quite a rare sight when you consider that the majority of the Cambodians are Buddhists; the possibility of finding a church is quite low, much less on a lake! So we went in to find the priest who was in charge, but to my disappointment he was out..

This is one family who settled on the banks of the lake - you can see quite a few as you walked along the banks of the lake..

Dinner-time! Here we are, having our dinner at this lovely restaurant, called The Red Piano..as recommended by Lonely Planet traveler's guidebook..affordable & nice ambience..

Arh..its nice little interior..Angelina Jolie once came here to eat during the filming of Tomb Raider - wonder if that's the place she sat?

After dinner we went around shopping..we happened to come across this lovely hotel in town, so we sat down inside to enjoy the ambience..it has a lovely courtyard inside it, easily accessible from its rather posh cafe at the lobby, didn't really take a photo of the interior though..but the design style is quite minimalist..rather nice. Oh, by the way staying in this hotel isn't cheap though - according to our tour guide, it cost somewhat around US$200 per night!

Rise and shine! We woke up darn early, hoping to take a picture-perfect shot of the sun rising against the backdrop of Angkor Wat..there were incredibly many tourists thinking along the same lines too - lots of Japanese, Europeans, Americans, etc were there as well.

We followed a small trail and it led us to the back of Angkor Wat - it is really lovely scene, not many tourists know of this spot though as the back entrance/exit was blocked.

Journey of faith..

Well, it's has been a year since I joined the R.C.I.A.(Rites of Christian Inititation for Adults). On Easter Vigil, at the parish of Catholic church of St Mary of the Angels, I was fully baptised into union with Christ. It has been really a trying year for me and my family as well. Everything wonderful and pure joy culminated in just one night, where memories of my life in a year began to flash back across my mind. At that precise moment, before stepping into the baptismal font, with my godfather besides me, I was a total bundle of nerves. Recalling that moment now, I couldn't help but shudder, yet I was feeling glad at the same time. I was literally baptised into death and risen again into new life as I heard Fr. Joe baptising me, at the same time invoking the Holy Trinity. I was gasping for breath and shivering with cold when i came up. Yet, there was this moment of pure exhilarating joy within me that I couldn't explain! During my First Communion, I struggled to hold back my tears as I finally understood what it really means as Christ gave up his Body and Blood in the form of the Eucharist (the source and summit of Christian life) as we Catholics believe he was truly present there. At that moment, I truly thanked Him for all that He has done for us as well as our Blessed Mother Mary and saints who prayed for us. Standing there in the picture, we are truly sinless as the waters of Baptism washed away all our sins! I would like to say a prayer for my wonderful sponsor who brought me into the Catholic faith, as well as my godfather, who guided me and tried to answer all my questions during my journey as a catechumen. The whole Easter Vigil really has been truly, truly wonderful, starting with the Service of Light, as everyone begans to light up their candle from each other from the Easter candle itself, thereby the whole church is lit up with candlelight, making it a truly wonderful sight. Proceeding next is the Liturgy of the Word, where Gloria is sang after so long, Liturgy of Baptism and finally Liturgy of the Eucharist. It has been a truly blessed night as the whole congregation celebrates and rejoices with us as Christ is truly Risen on Easter!

Looking back, it has not always a smooth path for me. My work, which requires me to stay late sometimes, makes me feel very tired at the end of the day and fatigue began to creep into me whenever I went for the OJT sessions. Thoughts of simply skipping the lessons would creep into my mind and I would try very hard to fight them off. The same could also be said for my part-time studies. It is so hard! I also wonder how some of my classmates managed to find the extra strength to stay awake, yet paying attention at the same time while I was always fighting with the familar Z-monstor in another world..At times, I really wonder if it's really worth it. I especially miss those days when I was still studying, so carefree, the only stress I encountered was slogging it out for my exam papers and making sure I got good grades, and of course our Final Year Project. Now, working life can be really hectic and at a lot of times it has really, really tested my patience as I encountered with many different kinds of people. I could only vent my frustrations and anger at some quiet place where no one is around or grumble it off in front of a friend. Moments like this I really ask God for his help and seek solicitude and comfort in Him. There's one thing I'm grateful to Him, that is both my parents gave me their blessings for my baptism as both of them are Buddhists and I even managed to get my mom to attend as well! But, there's one thing I've realised - that is this is the beginning of whole new life and journey ahead of me, as I seek to walk in His path as often as possible...

Loss Of A Great United Legend

Recently, one of the greatest winger Manchester
United ever produced has passed away. Even though i have not seen him play (I was not even born yet), he was to me one of the greatest ever to wear the famous no. 7 shirt (the next was Eric Cantona). The older generation will surely remember him for his dazzling dribbling skills amd the way he single-handedly won games for the club in those turbulent times and of course, the ever prestigous European Cup way back in 1968.
Fans of Manchester United and scores of supporters of other clubs pay homage to this great legend by honouring a minute's silence at some matches played today across England, testimony to this great legend well-loved by fans around the world, even up to this day. Here's an orbituary from the official Manchester United website as we fondly remember him and an interview of Sir Alex Ferguson, who pays tribute to the United legend.

All Saints & All Souls Day!

This year coincidentally, All Saints Day, a day of Obligation for Catholics, happens to fall on Deepavali. Immediately the next day, All Souls Day is celebrated. The good thing about this week is that there are 2 public holidays! Yeah..so that leaves me with only 3 days to work..attended Mass in two consecutives days. It was quite an experience for me. I especially liked Mass in the evening, the surroundings and the church compound looked especially beautiful! For me, All Souls Day is quite meaningful for me as it is a day to remember all those that have departed, as it makes me think of my lovely grandma, who is a Christian and passed away 6 years ago. I really prayed to our Heavenly Father and to our the saints to take care of her and for her to watch over me.

Lately I have started working full-time and it seems like time is a precious, precious thing for now I must adjust my life to work, exercising, attending Mass and very soon night classes for my degree course and of course not forgetting socialising with my beloved friends..The good thing about being busy is that it keeps you preoccupied and concentrate on your tasks, keeping your mind off from any stray thoughts that may somehow creep into you at the most inconvenient times..

The past few weeks has been quite enriching for me. I attended a focus group discussion at the National Youth Council. The purpose is to hear our opinions on how we find working life versus schooling life and other issues in life that concerns us. It was really an eye-opener for me as I really get to hear different views and opinions from people from all walks of life around the same age group as me. There was a married lady, an architect, several teachers, etc. I hope I won't forget most of what is being said in there as it really kind of inspires you to achieve more. I also attended a Tridentine Mass and a Charismatic Mass with friends, and met several unique people there with different views on Catholicism, which makes me more appreciative of my faith now. I just hope my journey as a catechumen will end soon on Easter!

Another cold night. Funny how weird the weather is nowadays.. & I'm been getting bouts of runny nose & stuff like that..& I have not been sleeping well..sigh.

Recently, I visited the Asian Civilizations Museum for the Vatican exhibit with most of my RCIA group. Frankly speaking, I was a little disappointed. Why? I expected to be inspired & in awe by the arts & artifacts on display. The artifacts & paintings were especially flown over from Rome itself & some are not even on display at the Vatican Museum! I concluded maybe it was due to the lack of time we had (we went during one of the Friday evenings as most of the group were working & had fork up some of their precious time in order to visit this special exhibition, and we only had 2 hrs) and the “glamour” (I could not come up with a better word to describe) & awe I envisioned as I stood staring transfixed at the relics and paintings…simply did not materialize. Ha! Maybe I was too naive to think of that! Well, I DID find some of the artifacts that capture my attention & left a deeper impression on me.

Just 2 days ago, I came across an article on the web that is close to my heart. It is about NASA's attempt at another moon landing planned somewhere in 2018. This time round, NASA will be sending the astronauts to the moon in a newly designed capsule that is capable of accommodating more astronauts than in the risky, ageing space shuttle that have been in use all these years. Frankly speaking, it is finally time they should come up with a new type of shuttle or one that is based on the existing configuration but modified to suit further space missions to be more cost-effective, etc. Do you know only the Americans are capable of launching the space shuttle into space as each shuttle launch can cost them millions of dollars & it is very expensive to maintain them as the technology onboard the space shuttle are already 20+years old..the fact that there are numerous accidents in recent years like shuttle crashes and deaths of astronauts and recent groundings of shuttle launches due to technical faults may contribute to the reason why the White House is planning to phase them out in 2010.

Well, I for one am rooting for the idea of the continuation of space exploration programs as it will be a setback for humanity if we do not reach for the stars, so to speak. Given the recent popularity of the Mars landing & the millions of hits on NASAs website the images brought back by the rover that landed there, I can only image the excitement generated this time round! The only time we get to see images of moon landing is way back in 1960s!And Im not even born yet! So, for the Baby Boomers like us (those born after 1980s) we will finally get to see one…as the event will surely be televised worldwide & broadcasted real-time on the Internet..a complete story & a flash video on the future moon mission can be found here.

Food For Thought..

Yupz, Im going to talk about food today. I witness 1 particular incident tonight that I believe is worth mentioning here..

After one whole morning & afternoon of rushing here & there, I met up with Camillus & Samuel for dinner. We all end up at a Turkish restaurant located at Far East plaza & we had quite a filling meal(except for Camillus, who said he wanted more =p)..so Samuel suggested we all try out a nice little Russian restaurant near Bugis. Off we go. .

By the time we reach it is around 9+ but the restaurant wasn't quite crowded. We proceeded upstairs. There were quite a number of people around us, noticeably working professionals in their late 20s and early 30s who were enjoying their meals & making small talk. As we had eaten early, we decided to order something light so we could just sit down & soak in the ambient surroundings & chit-chat. The restaurant gives you a very homely feeling, and the lady Russian manager would come around to the surrounding tables to linger & engage in light-hearted conversations with the diners. We had ordered 2 kvas (according to my friend Samuel which i vaguely recall it is a kind of beverage made from fermented rye, so that's the reason it tastes slightly like beer) & 1 plate of delicious hot-fried pancakes with sour cream which we all shared.

As we are about to leave, the manager came over and asked us how's the food & whether we would like to have more orders. We politely refused as we were actually quite full at that time but then the manager gave us a surprise and said we can order any dish on the house! That offer was increased to 2 more dishes (no, those were not cold leftovers). We had piping hot beet-root soup(Samuel mentioned its the national dish of Russia), 1 plate of nice little dumplings & fried pancakes! We thanked the manager profusely after we left and she even gave my friend Samuel some tips on how to chase after Russian gals..=p

Now, how many times in your life will you get such good hospitality? Even from fellow singaporeans, I would say its none. Now, Im not trying to say that Caucasians are always better than us(that would be making a general statement) nor am I undermining fellow Singaporeans. What Im trying to say is we should learn such graciousness, such generosity from foreigners and apply it in our daily lives. Isnt this is what PM Lee & all our past PM have always try to encourage us to be better citizens & Cosmopoliteans? I leave you with that thought..

P/S: For those who are interested in visiting the restaurant, it is located opposite Golden Landmark Hotel (you have to walk a short distance from Bugis MRT stn). The restaurant is called Nadezhda Russian Restaurant, along Arab Str.

Another Day Has Gone..

Hrmz..its a cold night 2nite & I feel another day has gone by & Im not doing anything constructive! But, today I went to my RCIA home sharing session with my sponsor, whom he has not got a chance to attend 4 the past few wks due to his NS commitments..real glad he could make it!

Frankly speaking, Im getting more & more at ease in each session & I really enjoyed them! I hope Im beginning to grow day by day in terms of faith..been relatively busy 4 the past few days, meeting up frens from my poly, went out 4 meals & stuff like that..4 the guys many r beginning to be enlisted 4 national service & as 4 the gals, many r starting 2 wk..real glad we get the rare chance 2 meet up & keep in touch..well, 2ml is a long day 4 me, I better be slping soon as Im helping out a very gd fren of mine send his PC 4 repair(& my 2!)sigh..computer problems..

Anyway, Im looking fwd 2 go 4 the Vatican exhibit at ACM Empress Place this coming Friday with my RCIA grp! Hope 2 sneak a few shots of the exhibits..=)
